Hey Matt, great article. Building to that Boom, Boom moment was excellent. Sorry I can't recommend any Horror for you to read. Smart using movies as examples, much more likely that people would have seen them.

Yeah, I think it definitely is desensitization. Writers feel like they have to push the envelope and be grotesque, when really that's not the secret at all. That can be a part of it, sure, because there are plenty of torture-porn junkies, but to write something truly scary, I think, is an art form of a much higher stratum.

Good post Matt. Yeah, I haven't seen much good horror, and mostly it's been taking its que from the visual media (more gore than horror). Maybe it's the effect of desensitization to physical violence in the general culture. You know, when I was a young kid, the stone cold killer was the bad guy. Nowadays they're the action hero.

In another place I made the comment that horror takes aim at the things that make us uncomfortable and then keep drilling down on that nerve.

Man, I'd love to contribute to a comeback like that. Maybe some day :-)

Nice post Matt, thanks for being first! I think Horror hit its prime in the eighties and may be due for a creepy comeback. Possibly from you?

They are also talking like Mysteries are on the downward slope now and I don't believe SF has ever came back as strong as Fantasy.

Lots of room for new voices in current markets.
